DOJ Recovers Over $5.6 Billion in False Claims Act Cases in Fiscal Year 2021
The U.S. Department of Justice recently announced that it recovered more than $5.6 billion in False Claims Act settlements and judgments in the fiscal year ending September 2021. This is the second largest cumulative total ever, behind only 2014.
The great bulk of this amount—more than $5 billion—was from matters involving the health care industry including drug and medical devices, managed care providers, hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories and physicians.
Recoveries in whistleblower cases made up over $1.6 billion of the total recovery amount. As a result, the government paid out $237 million to the whistleblowers who exposed the alleged fraud and false claims by filing qui tam actions.
