Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Stop Backing Single-Family Rentals
FHFA announced that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will conclude their single-family rental pilot programs and then terminate participation in the single-family rental market except through previously existing investor programs, Fannie Mae’s Multiple Financed Properties and Freddie Mac’s Investment Property Mortgages.
For nearly two years, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac participated in the single-family rental market through pilot programs designed to test and learn more about the market and best practices. In order to gather feedback, FHFA hosted a Single Family Rental Workshop in June of 2017, conducted an impact analysis, and sought input from industry stakeholders.
As a result of the pilot programs and the workshop, FHFA Director Melvin Watt concluded that the single-family rental investor market continues to perform successfully without the liquidity provided by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
