FCC and VA Team Up to Combat Robocalls Targeting Veterans
On December 14, 2018, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs released a bulletin informing the public that it will continue to team up with the FCC to combat illegal robocalls that target veterans and their families.
According to the bulletin, the FCC receives more than 200,000 complaints about unwanted calls each year. The FCC reports that some of these complaints include calls from fake charities including ones claiming to support veterans. The FCC also reports that it receives complaints about calls made by people claiming to be VA representatives. The VA believes the scam activity increases during the holiday season and advises veterans and their families not to disclose personal information such as account numbers, Social Security numbers, mother’s maiden names, or passwords to unexpected or suspicious callers. The VA also recommends that veterans and their families register their phone numbers to the Do Not Call List to block calls from telemarketers.
