States Looking to Hire Displaced Federal Workers and Increase Enforcement Activities

Multiple states, including California, Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin, are recruiting recently displaced federal workers.  States have launched campaigns, for example New York’s “We Want You” program, and governors have issued executive orders to aid displaced federal workers, for example Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro’s Executive Order “to consider relevant Federal Government work experience as equivalent to [Pennsylvania] work experience for the state’s top recruitment needs.”

The New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) specifically appears to be ramping up its enforcement efforts through staffing and proposed legislation.  NYDFS recently announced the hiring of a former top official from the CFPB to lead its Consumer Protection and Financial Enforcement Division.  The Fostering Affordability and Integrity through Reasonable (FAIR) Business Practices Act was proposed in New York to prohibit unfair and abusive business practices, strengthening the state’s current deceptive business practices law.
